Emerging Aviation Security Threat: Drones Near Airports

One of the newer security concerns in aviation today is drones flying near airports. Drones are small unmanned aircraft that many people use for hobbies, photography, or other activities. While drones can be useful, they can also cause serious problems when they are flown close to airports or airplanes. Because of these risks, aviation security organizations like the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) use several security layers to protect the aviation system. These layers work together to detect threats and stop problems before they affect aircraft or passengers. Drones are considered an emerging security threat because they are small and easy for people to buy and operate. Someone may accidentally fly a drone near an airport without realizing the danger. In more serious situations, a person could intentionally fly a drone in restricted airspace. Drones can be dangerous because they could collide with an aircraft during takeoff or landing. Even a small drone could damag...

Impact of weather in aviation

A recent weather event that had a major impact on aviation was the extreme rainfall and flooding in April 2024 at Dubai International Airport in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. The storm caused major flooding at the airport, which led to many flight delays and cancellations. I chose this event because it clearly shows how weather can quickly affect aviation operations, even at one of the busiest airports in the world. One of the biggest weather hazards during this event was heavy rainfall. The large amount of rain caused water to collect on runways and taxiways. When runways are flooded, aircraft may not be able to safely take off or land. Heavy rain can also reduce visibility for pilots and make it harder for aircraft to stop after landing. Because of these hazards, many flights had to be delayed or cancelled. Weather mostly happens in the troposphere, which is the lowest layer of the atmosphere. During the Dubai storm, warm air near the surface rose into the atmosphere. As the air rose,...

Spatial Disorientation

Spatial Disorientation is defined as the pilot's erroneous perception of an aircraft's position, attitude, or motion relative to the Earth's surface, often caused by sensory, vestibular, or visual misinformation. There are three types of Spatial D. Type 1 is Unrecognized- It is the most dangerous because pilots do not percieve any indication of spatial d. Type 2 is recognized- pilot perceives a problem but may fail to recognize it as spatial d. Type 3 is incapacitating- pilot experiences overwhelming sensation of movement. While there are ways to prevent SD, it is much easier said than done. A few ways to prevent SD are training instrument profeciency, good health, and aircraft design. Never fly VMC and IMC at the same time. Never fly without visual reference points. Avoid fatigue, smoking, hypoglycemia, hypoxia, and anxiety. A few ways to treat are to delay intuative actions, refer to your instruments and transfer the controls to other pilot.  SD can have a major impact o...

FAA administrator

According to Merriam, the definition of ethics is "the principles of conduct governing an individual or a profession." Currently the head of the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is under for violating the ethical agreement in his contract. The administrator pledged to sell all his shares in Republic Airways within 90 days of assuming his position. The deadline has since been exceeded by more than 150 days and the sale has yet to take place. I can see how this is a complete conflict of interest. A former CEO of an airline is now the CEO of the FAA. The administrator can partake in some really shady business to assure the success in a company he still holds shares in. Maybe he is attempting to ensure his pockets will not take a hit prior to selling all of his shares.  Borg, B. (2025, December 15). Safety concerns involving solo flights

In 2024 two student pilots involved in a helicopter crash at Fort Novosel. While the crash was not fatal, the students did walk away with minor injuries. The safety concern that I have with this incident is whether the student pilots are being trained effectively to conduct solo flights with such little hours and no Instructor Pilot in the aircraft. You barely have 50 flight hours at the phase of training these students were in. Conducting solo flights with little to zero experience raises a lot of safety concerns. That phase of training has since been eliminated from US Army flight school.
